Greg Holst was kind enough to sign two TTM autos (both of which were his official hockey rookie cards) that I recently sent to him so I figured I would do a post as a tribute to his. Greg Holst, who was born in Montreal, started out playing for the University of New Brunswick. There he achieved 28 goals and 46 points in 37 games inside of two years, 1971-1973.

Opportunity knocked for him when, in 1974, the New York Rangers decided to take a chance on him, selecting him overall. He was kind of small at only 5’10” and 170 lbs. so he had pretty much been ignored by the NHL. Before the start of the 1975-76 season, he was invited to the NY Rangers training camp and he did very well but was sent to the AHL. He played so well for the AHL that the NY Rangers called him up for two games.

Greg played five games for New York in 1976-77 and four more games in 1977-78. Eventually, the Austrian club IEV Innsbruck offered Greg a contract in 1978 and he accepted and became an instant hit in Austria where he ended up dominating the Austrian League for fifteen years.

Later, in 1993, he retired and became a coach. Even though he was not in the NHL that long, he was very successful in Austria and had a very rewarding career.

With Veteran's Day today, I think we should take a moment to honor the men and women who have served with honor and respect. Many have died or are wounded and they are should be treated with the highest esteem. A solider is a better role model (in my eyes), than a football or basketball player. We should be asking soldiers for the autographs and not celebrities. I mean how can you not look up to a solider? They are sacrificing their lives to protect us. Now no matter what your stance is on this war or any war (I'm not a big fan of killing people), I will honor a solider because I know that I could never make that ultimate sacrifice. I could never do the job that they do; so they have my respect.

With Veteran’s Day today, I think we should take a moment to honor the men and women who have served with honor and respect. Many have died or are wounded and they are should be treated with the highest esteem. A solider is a better role model (in my eyes), than a football or basketball player. We should be asking soldiers for the autographs and not celebrities. I mean how can you not look up to a solider? They are sacrificing their lives to protect us. Now no matter what your stance is on this war or any war (I’m not a big fan of killing people), I will honor a solider because I know that I could never make that ultimate sacrifice. I could never do the job that they do; so they have my respect.

I was reading NPR news and came across a piece on a World War II veteran Albert Madden, 92 who has become one of the oldest buglers to play taps at Arlington National Cemetery. On Saturday, he’ll play the song at the Massachusetts National Cemetery on Cape Cod, which marks the 84th time he’ll play taps for a ceremony in honor of Veterans Day. That is just so cool. This man played Taps at his father’s funeral in 1982 and has been playing it ever since.

In describing (only Mr. Madden can say it best) what this song means to each and every person when they hear the song, taps was described as “a very, very emotional call, when you play it at a funeral, you see the people break down and cry.You gotta [do] all you [can] do to hold back your own. After all, you’re big, you’re strong, you’re in the Army. You’re a powerful person. And you’re saying goodbye to a hero.”

A hero – wow those are powerful words and as I type my eyes are welling up. Basically, if you see a solider this week (or any week), go up to them and say thank you. It is the least that you can do.

When the words New York Rangers and Stanley Cup are referred to in the same phrase, the name Mark Messier will almost certainly spring to mind for a good number of hockey devotees. Messier was clearly etched into NHL lore the day he predicted the Rangers would win it all. Essentially it was hockey’s version of Babe Ruth’s famous called shot. He will have his place eternally among the best of the best hockey greats. His stats leave little argument as to this fact.

Since his days with the Edmonton Oilers alongside the Great One, we have watched him win 6 Stanley Cups and pursue his career with a dominance rarely seen before in any other player. As he approached the end of his storied career, my family and I decided that he was to be our player. Our collection, starting with his 1980-81 rookie card, has now grown into a massive card collection that features over 957 cards. We also have plenty of sports memorabilia in our collection, including a game-used jersey, an autographed hockey stick, two dozen autographed cards, and a number of printing plates.

We have had several Messier triumphs over time, with the first one being obtaining the first official card ever made of Mark Messier, his 1979-80 Edmonton Oilers post card. We did not find one of these until 3 years into collecting so it was a long time in coming. We also have managed to find several serial numbered cards of Mark bearing the production serial number 11, with our latest being the 2009-10 Upper Deck Series 2 Game Patch numbered 11/15 bearing a badass quad-color patch. We are also all about those cards with pals Gretz and Mess for a passing fancy card, or the display of Mark’s career milestones or even ones in which he’s pictured with hot young players like Evgeni Malkin and Sydney Crosby.

As our collection has grown, it is increasingly difficult to find a few of the older cards and especially hard finding, not to mention being able to afford, the multitude of his 1/1 cards on the market. Trading with other collectors on the net has become essential in growing our collection to where it’s at today. Generally speaking, Mark Messier cards are nearly always short printed, which also makes the quest more challenging without a doubt. We were happy to hear when he had signed again last year with Upper Deck, full well knowing his oncoming wave of cards may break our budget.

Can you believe all the hype surrounding Stephen Strasburg? I’ve never seen anything like it. It reminds me of Todd Van Poppel, the considerably oversold flamethrower drafted by the Oakland A’s in 1991. Van Poppel was described as the next Nolan Ryan, with a fastball that peaked at around 103 mph. As a junior baseball card collector I remember clamoring to get enough loose change together to afford Van Poppel’s 1991 Upper Deck Rookie Card – the crème de le crème of his rookies which is now worth pennies. Its suitable to presume that things didn’t quite pan out for Van Poppel in the Majors. In fact, he was one of the most monumental 1st round flops of the decade, never amounting to anything more then a mediocre bottom of the rotation inning eater.

This made me all the more skeptical of throwing down any money on Strasburg’s baseball cards. However, after seeing the way he has handled himself in the Majors this season I am now a true believer – even after his current injury occurred.

This prompted me to go and buy a box of Topps T-206 2010 baseball cards online in hopes of striking Strasburg gold within.

When it comes to collecting I guess you could say I am a purist as I’m not in the hobby just to turn a buck or two but in a way, simply to enjoy myself. In my opinion you can’t beat the excitement of box breaks, however in recent years collecting sports cards has become a rather expensive affair. Thankfully I came across this cool site where you can actually compare prices on hobby boxes side-by-side from a bunch of different dealers.

The best part about it is that you are not beholden to any particular retailer or seller. You simply get the best prices at that time for a given product regardless without any filtering. You really can’t ask for much more than that considering it is free.

I’m glad I did as I ended up pulling a sweet Strasburg rookie SP.

Think about different things to write about and I figured I’d go for sharing one among many nuggets of wisdom in hopes it will help some of y’all newer collectors. It may seem obvious but don’t automatically buy the least expensive item in a group of cards or memorabilia you are looking at to buy on eBay. There are many factors of buyer needs to look at before actually purchasing a given listing.

I strongly suggest the price not be the first consideration one takes into account when buying a sports card online — especially on eBay. The first factor that a savvy buyer should look at is the seller’s reputation. Does the individual have bad feedback? If so does it look like there’s a good logical reason for the feedback?

Next look at the shipping costs as these additional charges can seriously destroy an otherwise good deal and end up making you pay more on the backend that you would have otherwise.

You’ll also want to make sure the seller has a reasonable return policy. You want to ensure that the individual take care of you have something goes wrong with the transaction.

If you take these factors into account you’ll have a lot more peace of mind when building your collection online. You might pay a little bit more but at least to me the extra peace of mind is well worth it.

With Bowman fever still raging strong throughout the hobby topps added just a little bit more fuel to the fire by today announcing information on 2010 Bowman Chrome baseball. It is slated for a October release and will feature super prospect Steven Strasburg’s first Bowman chrome autograph. The superfractor variation of the Strasburg card could very well command in excess of 20 grand by the time it is released.

Other key exciting cards to look for in Bowman chrome this year include Aroldis Chapman’s first legitimate auto rookie card as well as autographs from Jason Heyward, Austin Jackson, Ike Davis, Tyler Colvin, and Drew Stubbs. Not to mention a big selection of USA chrome autographs which should be hotter than ever.

I can wait for the baby to drop. I wonder if I can pre-order a case or two this early?

Against my better judgment I bought a couple of dutch auction lots of baseball cards on Ebay recently. They arrived in the mail yesterday. The total cost including shipping? $32.

I’m not sure what I was expecting out of it exactly. Part of me expected (or hoped) that I would get a lot littered with the white whales of the sellers collection. Another part of me expected to get completely burnt and receive a bunch of 91′ Fleer and Donruss commons. One thing I didn’t expect was what I actually got.

This was the coolest Ebay baseball card lot I’ve ever bought and I have bought a lot in my day. The appeal of the lot wasn’t just the hits. They were pretty good but the real awesome part was the consistency, variety, and quality of the other cards in the lot. You couldn’t help but tell that a true baseball card collector put the lot together.

Some scans of cards I got from the lot are posted below which I hope are uploaded right as it is taking me awhile to get this whole wordpress thing down:
